Ghosts & Haunting

Biast Bhealach Odail

Baisd Bealach Odail literally means “Beast of Odal Pass.”

It was said to haunt Odal Pass during the construction of the road, appearing in various forms, including a greyhound or a sometimes a one legged human-like figure, often shrieking and attacking people after dark.

Sometimes it bore the form of a man, sometimes of a man with only one leg. At other times it appeared like a greyhound or beast prowling about, and sometimes it was heard uttering frightful shrieks and outcries which made the workmen leave their bothies in horror. It was only during the night it was seen or heard.

John Gregorson Campbell in Witchcraft and Second Sight in the Highlands and Islands of Scotland (1902)

The haunting is said to have subsided finally after one of its victims was found dead on the roadside pierced with two wounds, one on his side and one on his leg. It was deemed that these wounds could not have been caused by human hands. It has been suggested that the beast was the ghost of a murdered man, and that the haunting stopped when he took revenge on his murderer.
